The street is actually named for Brigadier General Hugh M. Mercer, who was killed fighting for the Revolution at the Battle of Princeton in 1777.

Historically within the property; the walls were painted light-grey and feature square cast-iron pilasters at the perimeter of each three-bay floor, these are accentuated by circular columns in the middle. Every floor is crowned by a projecting cornice, while the facade was painted a neutral grey tone, except for the first floor which has been contrasted in white.
